Frank Bush,
(1922-1997)
Naswa Wua Quet - Eagle Weather,
Eagle Clan Potawatomi
Pokagon Band, Gun Lake Band, & Huron Band
Born in Shelbyville, Michigan, Frank was the
Head Veteran, respected elder and pipe carrier in this area.
He was a father, a husband, a friend, and known to many in our community as
Uncle Frank.
Frank was also a combat veteran, serving in the United States Marine
Corps from 1940 to 1951. He was
awarded the Purple Heart medal for injuries received during WWII, leaving with
the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
When the federal government
allowed American Indians to gather, one of the first pow wows in Lower Michigan
was held at Charlton Park. As young man, Frank
attended as a drummer on the first Drum to return to the area.
Later
in his life, Frank was actively involved with the Native American Graves
Protection & Reburial Act. Frank helped repatriate
remains of the Anishnabe and worked with Charlton Park in returning our
ancestors to sacred burial grounds.
“All the people who say
they want to learn… where are they now?”
This was stated by Frank one evening following a long day of dancing at a
pow wow. He felt strongly that we
should gather together at the pow wows for teachings. This was the way of our people.
As we honor Frank’s
memory, we also honor the memory of other elders who have walked on, and we
honor the elders who come to share teachings for the people who are here to
listen.
